info about somesongs
intro
somesongs is a directory of online music. artists post links to mp3s of their music (hosted externally) for users to listen to. users can then rate and comment about the songs they listen to, making it easier for other users to find music that they would enjoy.
membership
to rate music or submit music or post on the message boards, you will need to register. to submit music, first register and then create an artist identity to associate with your user identity. you can create as many artists as you like, and they all can be attached to the same user account.
edit my song
you can edit the songs you've posted by going to the song info page for that song. if you're logged in, a red "edit" button will appear in the titlebar for the song. this will take you to a form where you can edit or delete your song.
favorites
each user has a favorite songs list and a favorite artists list. you can add and remove artists and songs on their info pages. then you can easily access the info pages for your favorites through the my info page. also, when other users view your user info page, they can see which songs and artists are your favorites, and that information will help them decide which songs to listen to.

user comments/questions/answers
mp3.com does not allow you to "deep link" songs. that means you can't link to the files from other pages, so you can't post them on somesongs. edit: it seems you actually can deep link with mp3.com if you know how (see magenta's post below). the only problem i see here is that it's obvious mp3.com does not want you to deep link. so if you want to deep link to your files on mp3.com, that's ok with me- just that if the time ever came when mp3.com contacted me about people deep linking, i'd have to take the links down. (certainly not an imminent danger.) edit: MP3.com is dead

iuma seems to be a pretty good choice for free music hosting. though apparently, there is a 30 song limit (3 10-song albums). though now i hear you can get around this limit by moving a song from album to album.

the numeric values of votes:
good: 10
okay: 5
bad: 0

a song's score is simply the average of all its votes.

i want to start making music! but how?

i've started a thread on the message board about this.

Actually, you can "deep link" songs on mp3.com, but it takes a little bit of doing. Use the "stream this song at high quality" link, but instead of just opening the link normally, save the link to disk. This file will just include the encrypted "deep linking" URL for the mp3. For example, Softspoken on mp3.com. This works because mp3.com's "streaming" server has no way of telling the difference between a webbrowser and an mp3 player.

I don't think mp3.com cares about the small amount of bandwidth which would be taken by this (and they don't have anything against it in the TOS anyway), but they can always change the encryption algorithm, which would break all old deep links.

minimum # of votes
a song's average rating is not displayed until it has received 5 votes. until then, it won't appear on any lists sorted by rating.

the song won't appear in the "top songs" list until it has received 15 votes.

after 10 votes, a song will appear in the "month's tops" list.

how do i upload my song ?

how do i upload my song ?
well, you don't upload your song to somesongs. you upload your song to your own webspace and then link to it from somesongs. the linking is done by clicking on "post song" at the top there. the uploading is something you have to figure out yourself.
---Jefff 2003-03-11 15:13:35
We would like to know how to delete our songs.

Make sure you're logged in. Get to the page of the song you want to delete, click the red "edit" box next to the song title, push the delete button.

Are there any rules for what types/styles of music are allowed here?

No. You'll find there are some styles people are more willing to actually listen to, but you're welcome to submit any song of yours.

Can you post cover songs in here?

Yes. You'll find some scattered throughout the site. Add's cover of Take On Me is (at the time of this post) 8th place in the overall listings.

Do the questions ever get answered?

Everyone forgets about these questions. Next time you have a question, I suggest you go to the somesongs message board (linked at the bottom of every page) and post your query there.

Thanks, John. Yeah, this page is kind of... neglected. For quick responses, the message board is probably a better bet.

Agreement %
When you are logged in, user info pages will show you a percentage indicating how much the user in question agrees with you. This number is determined by comparing the ratings you've given on every song that both of you have rated. These comparisons assign percentages like this:
good vs. bad : 0%
good or bad vs. okay : 50%
good vs. good, bad vs. bad, okay vs. okay : 100%
These comparisons are averaged together, rounded to the nearest 5% (to maintain some secrecy about specific ratings), and that's the number you see.

Comments, Replies, and the Recent Activity page
Each user is allowed to comment on each song once. This comment can be changed over and over. When replying to someone else's comment, it is more effective the "reply" to them rather than to reply via a comment. To reply to a comment or view existing replies, click on the link at the bottom right corner of the comment box.

To efficiently watch for comments and replies, use the "Recent Activity" page, which is linked in the top bar.

How many songs can I post?
As many as you want. You just have to wait 24 hours between posts.
---Jefff 2004-01-02 09:03:55
This whole which list should display thing is very confusing. I liked how it was. I liked having "newest songs" appear on the home page, but now I can't figure out how to display the "newest songs" list without simply logging off. Also, once I remove a list in My Info by hitting the little red square, I don't know how to get it back.
---Jim of Seattle 2004-04-15 16:26:52
in response to Jim-
Resetting your custom lists
At the bottom of the "my info" page is a gray button that says "reset user-defined lists and pages". Hit that. The newest songs should appear by default.

Adding pre-defined lists
Near the bottom of the "my info" page is a link that says "add lists to my lists". Hit that, and then hit the plus sign button next to whichever lists you want to add to your list sidebar.

Adding a list to your front page
Ok, I admit this is a little wonky. But when you have a list in your list sidebar, you can make it show up on the front page by going near the bottom of the "my info" page. There is a list of "my pages" the first one will always show up as the front page. By default, this is called the "front page". For each page, it shows you what lists it includes, and then it has a bunch of green numbered buttons. These buttons add lists to the page. The numbers correspond to where the list sits in your sidebar. Dear God, I hope that makes sense.

Paraphrasing Jeff:

Can I post a remix of Coldplay's "Clocks"?
Remixes of commercial songs are verboten. Partly for copyright reasons, and partly because they just wouldn't fit in on the site.

Is it okay to replace a song with an updated version after getting some comments and making some changes, or should it be listed as a new song?
---yaruss 2005-01-25 23:54:02
Another place you can get your MP3s hosted for free: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/535886

It's also a great promotional tool if you're selling your own CDs, even if it's not on Amazon.

how many members are there?
---KrazyGamer 2005-07-23 18:22:00
Is it okay to replace a song with an updated version after getting some comments and making some changes, or should it be listed as a new song?

It seems to be more or less up to you. You can replace the song and put that it's changed in the song notes, but people who have already listened and rated it may not think to go back and listen again. If you post a new version (separately from an existing version), standard practice is to do something like "song title [remix]" or "(new version)" or whatever you did to it.

how many members are there?

As of right now, 1398. Far from that many are still active or even lurk the site, though. And if you're wondering, there's no convenient way of checking that number that I'm aware of.
---john m 2005-09-21 01:25:33
Is there any way to see a list of users with the highest percentage of similarity to me? That would seem to be the best way to find people to make my "preferred users."
---Aaron Ackerson 2005-10-01 05:03:29
When posting a link to a file, it's telling me the file has to be in mp3 format - but it is in mp3 format - what's the deal here?
